Dr. Teresa “Terry” Leyba Ruiz is a career educator, executive leader, and passionate advocate for public education. A proud Arizonan, she is entirely a product of our public schools. Her journey began in South Phoenix as a student in the Roosevelt Elementary School District and continued through Northern Arizona University before concluding with a doctoral degree in Higher & Postsecondary Education from Arizona State University.

Terry has dedicated over 30 years to Arizona’s classrooms as a math teacher, an administrator, and ultimately as the President of Glendale Community College, where she championed programs that expanded access to higher education, workforce training, and career pathways for Arizona’s youth.

From being a first-generation college student to being a woman in STEM, she has consistently broken barriers and never backed down from a challenge. Now Terry is taking that same commitment to the race for State Superintendent of Public Instruction because she understands that public education is the heart and soul of Arizona and deserves to be protected.”

Carolyn’s note: Dr. Ruiz will be challenging Republican incumbent Tom Horne for Superintendent, elected again on Nov. 2022. Horne had previously served 2 terms as Superintenent of Public instruction in 2003 to 2011, and then as AZ Attorney General for one term, in 2011 to 2015
