Primary Election – City of Tucson

August 5 @ 6:00 am 7:00 pm MST

City of Tucson is conducting a primary election for Ward 3, 5 and 6 on the Tucson City Council.

Ward 3 is currently represented by Democrat Kevin Dahl, running for re-election. Opposing him is Democrat Sadie Shaw in her 2nd term on TUSD Governing Bd. The Dem winner will then face off with Republican Janet Wittenbraker in the General election in November.

Ward 5 is an open seat, as Democratic Councilman Richard Fimbres has retired after being elected 4 terms. Running are only Dems: Selina Barajas, Chris Elsner, and Jesse Lugo. Only Lugo has run before for Az House and this Ward seat. No L or R is running in Ward 5, so the Dem primary will determine who runs in the General Election.

UPDATE: Councilman Fimbres announced he will retire early on May 1 due to health reasons, so a replacement will be filled by the Tucson City Council till the end of his term on December 1, 2025. Rocque Perez II was appointed to be a place holder on May 6, 2025.

Ward 6 is an open seat, as Democratic appointed (May 2024) Councilwoman Karin Uhlich is not running for election. She also served 12 years (3 terms) representing Ward 3 on the Council, plus another 10 month appointment to Ward 3 after Councilman Paul Durham resigned in March, 2021.

Running for this seat are Leighton Rockafellow, Jr.; Miranda Schubert, who ran for this seat before in August 2021; and Jim Sinex. The winner will face Republican Jay Tolkoff in the General election.

Early ballots go out July 9, 2025.
