Special Primary Election 2025 – CD 7

AZ Sec. of State has announced dates for Special Primary and General Elections for CD 7, after the death of Congressman Raul Grijalva (D) on March 13, 2025. Raul served for 22 years in the U.S. House, previously on the Pima County Board of Supervisors and on the TUSD Governing Bd. He was 77 years old upon his death due to lung cancer.
The General Special Election for this seat will be on September 23, 2025. Since Congressman Grijalva was just elected again in Nov. 2024, this election must be from Sept. 2025 for the remainder of his term to Dec. 2026.
Former 3 term AZ House Rep. Daniel Hernandez Jr.(D) has announced a bid. He ran unsuccessfully for CD 6 in the Dem primary of August 2022. Raul’s daughter Adelita Grijalva (D) on the Pima County Bd. of Supervisors (District 5) just announced her candidacy on Cesar Chavez Day (3/31/25). Also running is Republican Daniel Butierez Sr. who challenged Raul for CD 7 in Nov. 2024, and lost 63% to 37%. Political activist from Planned Parenthood Deja Foxx (D) has also entered this race, at age 24. (But if she wins she will be 25 before she is sworn in, a minimum requirement of members of U.S. Congress).
