Since winning her election in 2020, Sadie Shaw has kept her promise to be the independent, critically thinking board member who sticks up for students, staff, and parents when no one else will.
Sadie is an artist, activist, and arts administrator from Tucson, AZ. She earned a BFA in Art & Visual Culture Education from the University of Arizona in 2019 while serving for two years as President of the Sugar Hill Neighborhood Association. Through this work, a renaissance of creative placemaking projects has been initiated in this historic Black neighborhood. In 2019, Sadie was appointed by Ward 3 Council Member Paul Durham, to serve on the City of Tucson’s Public Art & Community Design Committee, serving until September of 2022. Sadie currently serves on the League of Women Voters Board of Directors as an appointed member at large, as well as the Tucson Juneteenth Festival Board. She currently works at the Arts Foundation for Tucson and Southern Arizona as their Public Art & Community Design Administrator.
Sadie’s passion for the arts, the Tucson community, and her leadership in the neighborhood blossomed into the Sugar Hill Oral History Project, a collection of stories from the neighborhood’s elders, and the Sugar Hill Community Land Trust, the nonprofit she found with the ultimate goal of protecting the neighborhood and its residents from gentrification.
Carolyn’s note: Sadie is running for re-election on the TUSD Governing Board along with incumbents Natalie Luna Rose and Dr. Ravi Shah. Also running are two political newcomers Esterban Flores and Pilar Ruiz.
