FOEB (Friend of El Blog) Steve Gall gets good press

60261547-868a-5b8d-81aa-e3a0b0715087.preview-300 I got so involved in crazy news yesterday, I neglected to give a few well-earned kudos to Steve Gall, who has been pressing for recess in elementary schools with laudable enthusiasm and tenacity.

The Star gave Steve, his battles and successes a long, very positive story under the Health, medicine and fitness category.

Thanks to Tucson resident and exercise proponent Steve Gall, school districts in Arizona will now hold public hearings on whether schools should have 30 minutes of organized, mandatory recess per day.

The Legislature last week passed the Education Omnibus Bill, which included Gall's "recess amendment" and will take effect on Jan. 1, 2011. The governor signed the bill into law Tuesday.

There have been a few disagreements in the comments section of recent posts on the topic of mandatory recess, but one thing is certain. It's possible for a citizen on a mission who is willing to put in the time with intelligence and commitment to make a difference.

  1. Words fail me (I know, hard to believe for those who know me)- when it comes to my praise and admiration for the depth and determination of Steve Gall!! He is retired and doesn’t need to go fight for anything – but he spends his time mentoring kids and fighting for their welfare. I am proud to count him my friend. Steve is a hard working and committed Democrat. And it must be noted that one of the legislators who fought the hardest for Steve’s program is Frank Antenori. There is a message there!

  2. Thanks, Dave! The law states all districts must have open hearings on recess by January 1, 2011. I presented my case to the TUSD Governing Board on Tuesday night and they were very receptive. You are a wonderful support for my efforts! Best, Steve
