For your viewing/printing pleasure

by David Safier

Pres family sm If you want a copy of the Presidential Family Photo, you can download it in a number of sizes: small, medium, large and unbelievably large.

The photo comes with the following guidelines (this is for real, by the way):

"This official White House photograph is being made available only for publication by news organizations and/or for personal use printing by the subject(s) of the photograph. The photograph may not be manipulated in any way and may not be used in commercial or political materials, advertisements, emails, products, promotions that in any way suggests approval or endorsement of the President, the First Family, or the White House."

This has been a public service.

  1. Great, Lezli, so we can expect you to join the fight to preserve net neutrality against the forces of big business conservatives who are trying to take it from us. Right?

  2. Lezli, I believe there are things called copyrights. When you have the copyright to material (in this case, I don’t know if it belongs to the photographer or the government), you have rights to that material that others don’t. If I put an original photo on the internet, I believe it would come with the same restrictions. I don’t even think I’d have to print a notice as they did, since those rights belong to me whether I state them or not.

Intellectual property law is a huge and lucrative field because there are so many gray areas. Material on the web is subject to major intellectual property debates.
