Kentucky Republicans would like to reward former Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell for his service to the state and the country with a statue in his honor.
The questions that are probably on most political observers’ minds on hearing that proposal, after heaving out their latest meal at the prospect of giving the Political Prince of Darkness a statue, are “What service?” and “What honor?”
This is the person who, through his obstructionism and Machiavellian maneuvering, gave us Donald Trump, obstructed Trump’s impeachment conviction following January 6, 2021, and the current composition of the Supreme Court that took reproductive freedom away from women.
That is in addition to his role as obstructer-in-chief during the Obama years, including denying the 44th President the opportunity to put Merrick Garland on the Supreme Court.
Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear agrees that McConnell does not deserve a statue, commenting at a press event:
“I will also tell you that with everything going on in our country right now, Mitch McConnell could have prevented it. Mitch McConnell was that person who could have stepped forward after impeachment and prevented this new term where we have tariffs that are making things cost too much for our families, where we’re in a war with Iran that hasn’t been explained to our people or to Congress, where gas is spiking at such a significant level. So I’m not in favor of it, though I never say what I’m going to do with the bill until I actually either sign or veto it.”
The only good thing about a statue of Mitch McConnell being erected.
It will give something for people who love Democracy, progress, and freedom, something to spit at.
Mitch McConnell does deserve a reward for what he has done to this country and the American People.
And after he meets his Maker, he is going to go there.
