I like the idea of trying to boost the level of conceptual math understanding in K-12 schools. I would love to see the program they're creating here, linking UA grad students with working math teachers, help students become better at math.
But math whiz grad students who have never taught helping teachers be better teachers and students improve their math skills? This retired teacher wonders how well that will work.
I imagine advanced math students will benefit, since the grad students can bring ideas into the classroom that the teacher doesn't understand. Top students will be an eager audience. But if the purpose is to take the "I don't get math" crowd to a higher level of knowledge and understanding, I don't see how grad students who understand math but lack teaching experience will make that happen.
Prove me wrong. Please. Prove me wrong.
