Former Presidential Candidate and South Bend Indiana Mayor Pete Buttigieg will be nominated by President-Elect Joe Biden to serve as the next Secretary of Transportation.
If confirmed, Mayor Buttigieg would be the first openly gay person to serve in an American Presidential Administration.
His portfolio would include overseeing the modernization of the nations transportation infrastructure
President-Elect Biden wrote on the nomination:
“Mayor Pete Buttigieg is a patriot and a problem-solver who speaks to the best of who we are as a nation. I am nominating him for Secretary of Transportation because this position stands at the nexus of so many of the interlocking challenges and opportunities ahead of us. Jobs, infrastructure, equity, and climate all come together at the DOT, the site of some of our most ambitious plans to build back better. I trust Mayor Pete to lead this work with focus, decency, and a bold vision — he will bring people together to get big things done.”
Vice President-Elect Harris commented:
“One of the most important parts of building America back better is ushering in a safe, modern, and sustainable transportation system that helps us grow our economy, tackle our climate crisis, and connect all Americans to jobs and opportunity. Mayor Pete Buttigieg is an outstanding choice to help spearhead this work. An innovative problem solver and trailblazing public servant, Mayor Pete is deeply committed to bringing people together and upgrading our transportation system in a way that serves Americans of all backgrounds and communities of every size — urban and rural — across our country.”
It has been also reported that President-Elect Biden and Vice President-Elect Harris have selected former Michigan Governor Jennifer Granholm as their nominee for Secretary of Energy and former Environmental Protection Agency Director Gina McCarthy as a new White House Czar on Domestic Climate Policy. John Kerry has already been selected to oversee the international aspects of climate policy.
If confirmed, Governor Granholm would apparently focus some of her time on ushering in the growth of the production of electric cars.
Director McCarthy’s new position does not require Senate confirmation.
With these latest selections, the makeup of the Biden/Harris Administration is:
White Women: 16
Black Women: 10
Latino Women: 3
Asian Women: 5
Native American Women: 0
White Men: 13
Black Men: 3
Latino Men: 4
Asian Men: 1
Native American Men: 0
The President-Elect and Vice President-Elect still need to announce their picks for the Secretary of the Interior and Environmental Protection Agency. Those nominees will work with the ones selected today in fashioning sustainable infrastructure and environmental policies.
Biden/Harris team members have said that all cabinet selections should be made before Christmas.
The remaining cabinet-level positions to be announced are:
- Attorney General.
- Central Intelligence Agency Director.
- Secretary of Education.
- Secretary of the Interior.
- Environmental Protection Agency.
- Secretary of Labor.
- Secretary of Commerce.
- Head of N.A.S.A.

Two wrongs? Is that really what you took away from my comment?
My comment was about you, not caring who your boy appointed, no matter how obviously bad that choice was.
I complain that you don’t seem to think things through, but I’m starting to think you just don’t think at all.
“So your argument is two wrongs make a right?”
This is the standard GOP argument for everything.
Next up – the national debt (27 trillion as of October, 2020, an increase of 7 trillion under Trump.)
Just ’cause Trump did it, don’t make it right. Time for fiscal conservatism.
John, the GOP, everyone registered as Republican and everyone who voted for Trump in 2016 or 2020 really has no credibility. Y’all need to repent, get right with God, whatever. But don’t be preaching like what happened these last four years didn’t nearly destroy the republic.
Did you say anything when Ben Carson was picked for HUD?
Or when Rick Perry, who got a D in a class called “Meats” in college, was put in charge of the nuclear arsenal and he didn’t even know it?
Any thoughts in Ivanka’s role in the WH? She’s forbidden from running a charity in New York and had to take ethics classes with her bros as part of a court order, and has been racking up dozens of trademarks in China.
Anyway, gotta’ run, we’re planning a vacation for 2021, we’re taking a second mortgage out with Trump Mortgage, then booking flights through Trump Travel on Trump Air and staying at the Trump Taj Mahal, where we’ll sleep on Trump Mattresses and sit in Trump Chairs while we eat Trump steaks and relax with Trump Vodka with Trump Water chasers, then a cruise on the Trump Princess where we’ll be treated to a fashion show with Trump Models.
First, of course, we have to send our urine samples out for our custom Trump Vitamins to make sure we’re super healthy.
I know it all sounds expensive, but when you’re a graduate of Trump University you make the big dough so you can do these things and still have money left over to donate to the totally legit Trump Foundation.
Those are all real things, Johnny Boy, and you voted for that guy twice, so maybe your judgement ain’t the best.
By comparison alone Mayor Pete is already doing a better job than anyone in 45’s cabinet.
Oh, yeah, and Melania was a nude model, real kinky stuff with other ladies, we know because John Barron leaked the photos. Or was it David Dennison? I forget.
Don’t google that at work.
So your argument is two wrongs make a right?
Hi John. Pete Buttigieg, being a former mayor (executive), is probably more qualified to be Secretary of Transportation than Ben Carson was to be Secretary of HUD or any of the other Trump appointees previously cited. By the way, you have not replied to my queries on what you thought of Mr. Hoffman being your vice-chair of the Government and Elections Committee. Please tell us you do not think he is qualified. Take care.
John, we’ll see about Buttigieg, time will tell. Either the Biden/Harris Team was very impressed with his interviews or he cut a hell of a deal.
I think it’s a bigger problem that Biden is ignoring Sanders and anyone associated with him. I don’t think it’s a great idea to ignore a challenger who had that much support. Obama appointed Hillary to Secretary of State (a mistake in my opinion) but it was clear he had to acknowledge her level of support in the electorate.
The Democratic elites (who operate in “take it from my cold, dead hands” mode) despise Sanders. They fear he has been trying to take over the Democratic Party and recreate it with his own ideology. And the cold, dead hands crowd also fears the young, liberal women in the House of Representatives (@AOC et al).
So, I don’t know, John, but I’ll say this. I would choose Biden/Harris and their picks ten thousand times rather than watch democracy die under the tutelage of a carnival barker president, his criminal family, and the incompetent buffoons he chose to run the government.
That makes it ok in your mind?
Secretary of the Interior should be Raul Grijalva.
Mayor Pete is getting a nice reward for dropping out of the primaries before Super Tuesday and endorsing Biden.
But I like Pete, I wish him well. Definitely the most attractive of the male picks so far. And I’m sure he’s a quick study and will up to speed in no time.
Dems need to keep their House Majority.
Well, I would think a good Democratic candidate could win in Rep Grijalva’s blue district.
Same as Bernie Sanders who wants to be Secretary of Labor. The governor of Vermont has said he would appoint a replacement who would caucus with Democrats. But “Bernie is needed in the Senate blah blah.” I think this is just wrong since Bernie is the only other candidate who had a significant amount of support. And, no one associated with Bernie Sanders has gotten any kind of nomination or appointment, at any level.
Pete’s nomination is a reward, no getting around that.
Biden is doing pretty good on diversity, at least so far (except for Native Americans.)
But there seems to be a clear message here for Bernie supporters and others who believe in progressive policies.
I hope he is a quick study because he has no transportation experience and only was the mayor of a small city. Only in America. But he did endorse Biden early and rides a mean skateboard. This is an embarrassment for Biden.
You obviously have not seen the Trump cabinet picks over the last four years like the ones at EPA, Education, Labor, and Intelligence.
John, the cabinet level position especially where there is a lack of expertise clearly indicates that this was a reward. But Pete is young, extremely bright, and enthusiastic. I actually do think he will be a quick study and work hard to succeed because he intends for this to be his first big job, not his last.
But David is right. Donald Trump set the lowest bar imaginable for cabinet picks and other positions in the WH. Some of the most despicable people who walk the Earth have been in the Trump Administration. And there was a hell of a lot of them due to the revolving door in his so-called presidency that was based on his reality show.
For Secretary of the Interior Biden is nominating Representative Deb Haaland (D-NM), a safe district. Historic as she’s the first Native American to be nominated for a Cabinet position and hopefully confirmed. Representative Grijalva would have also been a good choice though I’m happy to still be represented by him. Like Deb, Raul has spent years fighting the good fight.
Well, a Native American is a good choice for Secretary of the Interior. I missed Rep Grijalva’s district by a few miles which meant I had McSally for four years and now Ann Kirkpatrick who I assume shows up for work but doesn’t say much. It would be nice to be represented.
Speaking of Raul, from the Washington Post via Balloon Juice:
Rep. Raúl M. Grijalva (D-Ariz.), who chairs the House Natural Resources Committee and helped lead the campaign on behalf of Haaland, said that “any comment that she’s not qualified for the job is wrong, and a cheap shot.” By selecting Haaland, Grijalva added, Biden is helping “begin to rewrite a legacy in this country. And I think that’s good given everything else that’s going on around us.”…
Thanks for the heads up. I will write it up along with the EPA nominee when the transition gives the official announcement.
As our childhood hero would say: “Why, soitenly!”
