One of the recurring themes Donald Trump has made over the last few weeks in his assertions that the United States must have Greenland is his claim that America’s partners in N.A.T.O. are not reliable, and he doubted they would come to the United States assistance if it was attacked.
He made the same claims at his address in Davos yesterday.
It is another instance where Mr. Trump has demonstrated his historical illiteracy or dementia or both.
N.A.T.O. Secretary General Mark Rutte was not having it.
During a meeting that resulted in Trump backing off, for now, from his threats on Greenland, Rutte reminded Trump of N.A.T.O. members flocking to the United States defense following the terrorist attack on 9/11 and the later war in Afghanistan.
In his remarks to Trump, Rutte reminded him that:
“For every two Americans that paid the ultimate price, there was one soldier from another N.A.T.O. country who did not come back to his family. From the Netherlands. From Denmark in particular. So you can be assured, absolutely, that if ever the U.S. came under attack, your allies will be with you, absolutely…”
All Trump could do when Rutte was schooling him was nod like a dressed-down elementary school child.
Unfortunately, this does not happen enough with members of Mr. Trump’s own party.
They need to wise up and show the same courage as Rutte, Canadian Prime Minister Carney, French President Macron, and Democrats in this country.
