This is truly astounding. The outside audit commissioned and paid for by the ADE gave Mexican American Studies a clean bill of health. No, it was even better than that. According to the Star, the audit reported the "program is designed to improve student achievement," "[d]ata indicates that the graduation rate of students in the program is higher than those not in the program," and "[n]o observable evidence was present to indicate that any classroom within TUSD is in direct violation of the law."
Huppenthal's decision: MAS violates HB 2281. Here is his statement, in direct contradiction to the outside audit.
"This decision is not about politics; it is about education," Huppenthal said. "I have a legal responsibility to uphold the law and a professional imperative to ensure every student has access to an excellent education."
Simply astounding.
Absolutely typical.
I haven't seen a copy of the audit yet. I expect it to make for interesting reading.

Huppenthal was on Horizon last night – http://www.azpbs.org/video/horizon.php?vidId=2331 – and I found his performance perplexing. He couldn’t seem to provide any specific examples of any problems. Now we know why.
