If books fall from TUSD shelves, can the Star hear it?

by David Safier

MAS-related books were banned at TUSD. Since Jeff Biggers covered the story on Salon, it's been on blogs (like BfA) and other publications across the country. But no word from the Star. Hasn't Star education reporter Alexis Huicochea heard the news? Don't she and the Star editors believe the story is newsworthy?

Who knows, maybe Biggers got the story wrong or misrepresented what happened. If so the Star should contact TUSD and get a correction. [Hint: talk to Cara Rene, TUSD's spokesperson, who said the books have been "cleared from all classrooms, boxed up and sent to the Textbook Depository for storage."]

Maybe there's more to the story, like, the books were pulled because they didn't go through the proper authorization process, not because they've been "banned." If so, that begs questions like:

  • Why was Shakespeare's "The Tempest" pulled?
  • Why weren't the books pulled as soon as TUSD realized they hadn't been properly authorized, which was months ago? Why right now?
  • Has TUSD checked to see if other texts used in other courses haven't gotten proper authorization?

The Star has covered the MAS story in detail. Why not the story of the banned books?
