The negotiations continue for the sale of the Citizen. This paragraph may provide a clue as to why the papers are in trouble:

Stephen Hadland, publisher of another California weekly owned by the Santa Monica group, the Culver City Observer, said Friday that he placed an ad on Craigslist.org seeking newspaper ad salespeople to work in Tucson. Hadland declined to comment further because of a confidentiality agreement with Gannett. [emphasis added]

Well, sure, what do you expect? Do you have any idea how much it costs to put a classified ad in the newspaper?
