Just a couple of 60s guys sharing

by David Safier

I was just listening to NPR in the car. A filmmaker was being interviewed about his career. He talked about how back in the day, he and his friends, all filmmakers, all semi-outsiders, would sit around and watch each others' rough cuts, criticize and make suggestions. Very helpful, communal, non competitive stuff.

So he and another filmmaker both had big movies coming out soon. Maybe they'll hit, maybe they'll miss. Maybe one will hit and the other will miss (Each filmmaker thought the other had a better chance for financial success). So they gave each other "points" on their movies, meaning that if one did better than the other, they'd both come out OK.

The filmmaker being interviewed was George Lucas. His buddy was Steven Spielberg. The films were Star Wars and Close Encounters of the Third Kind.

If memory serves, they both did pretty well for themselves.
