Both Arizona Secretary of State/Democratic Gubernatorial Nominee Katie Hobbs and Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego called attention to the plight of domestic violence victims on this Purple Thursday.
Purple Thursday is a day every October when activists dedicate themselves to informing the public of the dangers of domestic violence at the hands of a spouse or significant other. The month of October is recognized as Domestic Violence Awareness Month.
According to data from the National Domestic Violence Hotline and NPR, approximately one-third of women and one-quarter of men experience a form of physical/sexual assault and/or harassment from the person they are in a relationship with.
Earlier today, Ms. Hobbs, drawing on her experience as a social worker, posted on social media:
Proud to be wearing purple today in honor of #PurpleThursday. Domestic violence can affect anyone, and as a social worker, I know the difference proper resources and advocacy can make in supporting survivors. pic.twitter.com/hyLyjg4tv8

Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego issued a Public Service video post, calling attention to the fact that “domestic violence is not just physical and could include emotional abuse, financial control, intimidation, technological abuse, or sexual coercion.”
She also advised people watching the video that if they are a victim of domestic violence to call 1-800-799-SAFE (7233) and said that Phoenix wants to lead in the prevention and stopping of this violent abuse. She also provided the local website information for victims in the below social media posts by clicking www.phoenix.gov/PaintPhoenixPurple.
One in four women, and one in 10 men are victims of #DomesticViolence. Today is #WearPurpleDay to raise awareness around this important issue. If you or someone you know needs help, call the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 800-799-SAFE (7233). pic.twitter.com/OZm321ZAzJ
