Kirk Adams: We’re not anti-solar energy, just stupid

by David Safier

HB2701, which would have killed the solar energy momentum in Arizona and cost the state business and jobs, has died a humiliating death. When the entire Corporation Commission opposes the bill and its Republican chair Kris Mayes can't believe the "disconnect" of some legislators "unfortunately from my party," even Republican legislators understand they may be in a bit of trouble and are ready to cut their losses.

Who would be foolish enough to put their names onto legislation this bad without thinking about the consequences? you might ask. Who would neglect to talk with their Republican friends on the Corporation Commission and get some friendly input on energy related legislation?

The answer is, over 50 Republicans, including, from southern Arizona, primary sponsor Frank Antenori and co-sponsors Al Melvin, Vic Williams, David Gowan, David Stevens and, yes, thinks-he's-ready-for-prime-time Jonathan Paton.

Republican House Speaker Kirk Adams doesn't want anyone to get the wrong idea, though.

“Recent news stories have depicted the Arizona House of Representatives as being anti-solar energy,” Adams said. “I wish to set the record straight.”

That's quite a choice, isn't it? Either 50 plus Republican legislators are anti-solar, or they're mindless lemmings who will follow any leader off the nearest cliff.

Ladies and gentlemen, I give you, our Republican legislative majority!
