Today's editorial in the Citizen is none too happy with some Republican legislators. They're delaying the building of dorms at UA.
Here's the truly weird part. Building more dorms won't cost the state any money.
Most aggravating about this situation is the fact that the dormitory projects are funded by the students' rent payments – not by the state budget.
And money for the construction already is being collected: UA dorm rates were increased by 9 percent in March – with 5 percent of that increase earmarked to pay for the three Sixth Street dormitories.
When the legislative Joint Committee on Capital Review canceled a meeting to review a number of building projects (cough, Russell Pearce, cough), the dorm construction was among the projects to be discussed.
The cancellation portends the near-certain abandonment of the package, which was intended to not only improve our universities, but also revive Arizona's construction industry and create jobs.
When Dolores Huerta famously said "Republicans hate Latinos," she got a whole lot of guff from Republicans and the compliant media. No comment right now on Huerta's statement, though I commented awhile ago. But let me add my own inflammatory rhetoric:
Republicans hate students.
Republicans hate the construction industry.
Republicans hate construction workers.
Republicans hate the future.
Sorry if I've left anything or anyone out.
Note: Jonathan Paton, who rode the "Republicans hate Latinos" horse as far as he could, has gone on record against cutting the dorm building project. Good for him — this time.
