Since Arizona Legislative District (LD) LD 21 Candidate Consuelo Hernandez was last interviewed, the State Legislative session ended with a bipartisan budget agreement and the United States Supreme Court issued repressive rulings on gun control, a woman’s right to choose, and Environmental Protection Agency (E.P.A.) regulations.
In light of these developments, Ms. Hernandez, the President of the Sunnyside Unified School District Governing Board, has graciously answered questions on the progress of her campaign and how she would handle these new situations.
The questions and her responses are below.
1) Please tell the readers the progress of your campaign and your outreach to the constituents in LD 21.
“Throughout the last six months, Team Hernandez has visited and/or canvassed in every county in our District. Meeting and talking with voters has always been my favorite part of any campaign. As we push hard towards the finish line, we are ramping up our field capacity with dozens more volunteers which are the heart and soul of Team Hernandez.”
2) Has the passage of the bipartisan budget and water deal changed what you would fight for if you were elected to the legislature? Please advise.
“Look, I think the $5.3B budget surplus should change the way we all think. The right wing Arizona GOP has done everything it can to undercut critical items like education and infrastructure to score political points. They are creating huge educational and economic gaps that could irrevocably damage Arizona’s future — it’s clear the Arizona GOP doesn’t have the same priorities.
Indeed after going off the rails in the last two years with disturbed conspiracy theories, attempts to overthrow our democracy, the abrogation of basic leadership responsibilities in Arizona government and their efforts to subjugate women by Arizona’s Republicans, it’s clear they just want to grab power and not actually solve problems.
My priorities remain as they have always been. I want to fully fund education, create a common sense water conservation/infrastructure policy that ensures resources are managed properly, help rebuild our economy post pandemic and secure our right to both.”
3) Has the recent Supreme Court rulings on guns, abortion, and the EPA changed what you would fight for if you were elected to the legislature? Please explain.
“I have been a front and center vocal advocate for a woman’s right to choose including ensuring access to reproductive healthcare. I believe that restricting a woman’s right to choose as well their access to birth control are fundamentally immoral acts by Republicans in Arizona — and we will end that tyranny.
In addition, protecting the mandates of our environment, especially clean air and water, have remained at the top of priority list. We face a climate crisis, which includes our own mega drought which must be arrested before it is too late.”
4) Is there anything not covered in the first three questions that you would like the readers to know about your candidacy? Please explain.
“I am proud to have earned the support of the largest unions and groups in the state such as UFCW, AFLCIO, AEA, Stand for Children, Boiler Makers, Teamsters, Stonewall Democrats, and more. These endorsements are a testament to the type of leader I have demonstrated to be and the confidence they have of me to lead the fight to our state capitol.”
