Leading Democratic Statewide, Congressional, and Legislative Candidates gathered at a Unite for Arizona Rally at Carpenters Union Hall in Phoenix this afternoon (August 27, 2022) and made their case to Grand Canyon State voters on why they should choose them, defined as team sanity, by Gubernatorial Nominee Katie Hobbs over what Attorney General Nominee Kris Mayes labeled team crazy as personified by the extremist-dangerous Trump anointed Republican nominees.
All the statewide candidates, except for Senator Mark Kelly, attended and gave speeches on why this election is so important for saving reality, Democracy, protecting women’s rights, moving the state forward, and lifting people up.

Sandra Kennedy told the People to Vote for Two on the Corporation Commission.
Corporation Commissioner Sandra Kennedy spent her time repeatedly reminding the audience that in order to gain a majority on the Arizona Corporation Commission, it was necessary to “vote for two” candidates: her and former Tempe Vice Mayor Lauren Kuby.
Kennedy also reminded the audience of the importance of the Commission, stating that:
“If you turn on your light switch, we regulate it. If you cross a railroad, we regulate it. If you turn on a water spigot, we regulate it.”

Lauren Kuby built on Kennedy’s remarks.
Touting her work as Vice Mayor of Tempe and as a sustainability scientist on water and energy matters, Lauren Kuby said her and Kennedy’s election was vital to making the Corporation Commission both the Consumer and Climate Commissions, answerable to the people, not monied business interests.
Calling this the “most important race no one is talking about,” she lamented that Arizona, which has the highest electric bills in the region and among the highest air pollution in the country, has not fully gone on board fully investing in solar technology.
She ended by condemning the science and election denialism of the dangerous Republican extremists and, echoing Kennedy, told the audience, “when you knock on doors, vote for two, we will be consumer champions.”

Kathy Hoffman called on Republicans to condemn Tom Horne for supporting David Stringer.
Superintendent of Public Instruction Kathy Hoffman commemorated that for the first time in 20 years, Arizona elected an educator and a Democrat as Superintendent. She also celebrated the fact that she was the first Superintendent to give birth to a child while in office.
The Superintendent then went after Extremist Intolerant Republicans for disgustingly calling her a groomer because she has fought to make schools safe and inclusive for all students, including members of the LGBTQ community. She also called on them to rebuke her opponent Tom Horne for working with David Stringer, one of his supporters who is a convicted sex criminal and racist.
Ms. Hoffman repeated her favorite slogan “Arizona’s future starts in our schools” and said she could not wait to start her second term.

Martin Quezada Wants to Invest in the People.
State Senator Martin Quezada, the Democratic Nominee for State Treasurer, pledged to bring ethics and transparency into that state office.
Saying his opponent, Kimberly Yee, is just as extreme as the other dangerous Trump Republicans, Quezada noted that “my opponent is playing politics with our taxpayer dollars. I want to put our money back into you…We need to keep politics out of these investment decisions.”
He added that “every one of these dollars represents your money that has been entrusted to the government to reflect your values: schools, housing, water: these dollars should be an investment in our values, children, and future.”

Adrian Fontes Calls for a United Front to Fight Against the Extremism of the Trump Republicans.
Starting with “are we ready to win Democrats,” Secretary of State Nominee Adrian Fontes called for “a unified front against the extremism represented by all our opponents,” saying the people “are looking to us for leadership” in helping families with getting higher wages, high-quality education, a safe environment, and an economy that works for everyone.
Saying he would honor and defend fair and honest elections, Fontes warned that January 6 collaborator and Oath Keeper Mark Finchem would bring totalitarianism to Arizona’s election system and would “destroy elections and democracy if elected by denying citizens the right to vote by mail and let the state legislature overrule their vote.”
He closed by saying, “with your help, I will be Arizona’s next Secretary of State. Let’s go win.”

Attorney General Nominee Kris Mayes says American Democracy runs through Arizona.
For Attorney General Nominee Kris Mayes, this election is about the soul of Arizona and the country because “American Democracy runs through Arizona” and “It is our duty to save this country we love.”
Saying “we are going to fight like hell for a woman’s right to choose, this democracy we love, our water rights, and supply, we have phenomenal candidates while the Republicans nominated crazy,” Mayes pledged to “stand up for what is right for every Arizonan,” chastizing Republicans for offering ideas from the 1800s while Democrats present proposals that would “take us forward.”
Vowing to fight for every vote, Mayes pledged to:
- Protect Democracy.
- Never prosecute a woman or medical/health professional for a patient using their constitutionally granted right to privacy.
- Root out corruption like the deal granting Saudis the right to waste water growing alfalfa.
She ended her presentation by stating, “my opponent wants to be the lawyer for Donald Trump. I want to be the lawyer for all Arizonans.

Katie Hobbs Wants to Bring People Together and Make a Difference
Starting with “Good afternoon Arizona Democrats and everyone that wants to join team sanity,” Democratic Gubernatorial Nominee Katie Hobbs recounted her career, first as a social worker/advocate helping abused women, then as a legislator who helped secure legislation expanding Medicaid and the production of rape kits, and as Secretary of State, where despite death threats to her and members of her family (including her children,) she helped oversee one of the most secure elections in Arizona history.
Despite being interrupted by a heckler, Hobbs relayed that she has “ loved making a difference for everyday Arizonans,” and pledged to work to “bring people together” to find solutions to the problems facing the people in the state.

Secretary Hobbs finished by stating this election was a “choice between sanity and chaos” and a “sore loser vs someone who is getting the job done for Arizona,” declaring that she was the candidate that has proven she could win a statewide race and was “not afraid of a tough fight.”

Arizona Democratic Party Chairperson Raquel Teran closes the event.
Saying “we will win in November,” Arizona Democratic Party Chairperson Raquel Teran urged the audience “to knock on doors and call every single voter to turn everyone out” so they could “take them (the candidates) to (across) the finish line.”
