“Los Suns” story doesn’t rise to Star’s newsprint standards

by David Safier

Los-sunsx The Suns plan to wear "Los Suns" jerseys in tonight's playoff game, voicing their opposition to SB 1070 and their support of Arizona's Hispanic community. Viva, Los Suns!

The story isn't in today's Star newspaper.

It's in an AP story posted on the Star's website Tuesday, so the paper knew about the story well in advance of today's deadline.

It's in the Republic.

It's in the San Jose Mercury News.

It's in the Denver Post.

It's in the Montreal Gazette.

It's in the New York Times.

It's in the New York Daily News.

It's in USA Today.

It's on ESPN.

But it's not in the newsprint edition of the Star.

Because I'm looking on the web, I can't be certain all those papers carried the story in newsprint. But if those papers and many more thought the story deserved a mention — and often wrote their own stories, unlike the Star, which used an AP story on its website — our sports-crazed Star might give it a mention someplace, even in the Sports section.

Is this just bad journalism, or is there an "I'm not giving those lefties like our City Council that voted to sue over SB 1070 any credibility by saying basketball players and their management agree" agenda?

Viva, Los Suns!

UPDATE: The Los Suns story was covered in a brief piece on MSNBC. But I guess people here in Tucson aren't interested. If they were, the Star would have put the story in the paper, don't you think?

  1. It seems as though the Star sees its most formidable opponent as being the Gila Courier. Like the Star is jousting for their audience. I can’t help but wonder at what point will it become appropriate to call for a boycott of the Star and just tell folks to tune in to the Tucson Weekly or the Tucson Sentinel for the REAL news that matters. At the very least, throw your business towards these news outlets that aren’t beholden to anyone but themselves.
