Mayor Anna Tovar wants to bring Integrity, Inclusiveness, and Leadership to the Arizona Corporation Commission

Anna Tovar is running to be a voice for all Arizonans on the Corporation Commission.

The Corporation Commission, formed in the Progressive Era was designed to “protect the health, safety, and welfare of Arizonians.  They oversee all business in the State, foreign and domestic, regulate all non-municipal utilities and rates, the safety of railroads, pipelines, and oversee the securities marketplace and brokers that sell those products.”

The Commission has triggered controversy over the last several years due to some of the Commissioners receiving Dark Money contributions, utility rate increases, and a failure to invest more in renewable energy.

Running with Shea Stanfield and Bill Mundell as part of the 2020 Solar Team, the Tolleson Mayor (and former State Legislator and City Council member) wants to champion renewable energy, protect consumers, and bring “trust and accountability” to the Commission if she wins a seat this November.

She pledges to make decisions based on what “is good for the state.”

Mayor Tovar graciously took the time to discuss her candidacy.

The questions and her responses are below.

  • Please tell the voters three reasons they should pick you for the Corporation Commission.

  • “I want to be the voice for all Arizonans, and I will put them first. it is more important to hear what is important to them, listen to their concerns, and bring forward solutions based on what they said with a sense of purpose.”
  • “Restoring trust and accountability to the Corporation Commission. The focus needs to come back to where it belongs and that is serving everyday Arizonans.”
  • “Expanding renewable energy. I want to fight to build a renewable infrastructure that reduces carbon emissions, creates jobs, and delivers reliable and affordable electricity to consumers.”

  • Please tell the voters at least three ways any of your opponents has failed the Commission.

  • “The primary role of the Commission is to advocate for Arizonans who are customers of our public utility companies. They have sided with the utilities against Arizonans far too often. “Not been a true consumer advocate for Arizona Families.”
  • “The unjust rate increases in utility bills and not moving forward in expanding renewable energy.”
  • “Their alliance with special interest dark money entities and monopolies. It has played a part in their failing the people they serve on the Commission.”

  • Please tell the voters at least three issues you feel are important to pursue if you are elected to the Corporation Commission?
  • “Expanding renewable energy such as solar, wind, and other technologies that are out there. We need to be open to effective clean energy options. We need to have a plan in place in order to achieve goals by 2040 or 2050. The incorporation of high paying, clean energy jobs would also help move the state forward.”
  • “Restoring the trust and accountability back to the Commission with a primary focus on serving Arizonans and restoring credibility with Arizonans and with other commissions across the country. I want to improve upon that and serve Arizonans.”

  • “Being a voice for Arizonans so that they know they have a Commissioner that will be readily accessible and to learn from them. You need to meet people where they are and hear their concerns. It needs to be a collaborative effort where the people know their commissioners will be there for them.”

  • Is there anything you would like the voter to know about you or your candidacy that has not been asked in the first three questions?
  • “The opportunity for Arizonans to have three great commissioners running as a Solar Team 2020 and work for Arizona Families and have three seats filled by amazing Democrats.”

  • “The Arizona Corporation Commission affects Arizonans’ lives every single day without them knowing it. It is often called the most powerful entity in the entire state of Arizona. This is why it is extremely important to vote for the Solar Team 2020 of me, Anna Tovar, and Shea Stanfield and Bill Mundell on November 3, 2020.”
