McCain Ranch: Dishonorable.

by David Safier

The “original maverick” has been suffering a crisis of conscience lately, spending sleepless nights looking in the mirror and not liking what he sees.

No wonder. McCain promised to run a “respectful campaign,” but when he was asked about his Paris Hilton/Britney Spears ad, he said “I don’t think our campaign is negative in the slightest.” Two weeks ago, Time Magazine asked him to define Honor in an interview, and the best he could come up with was “Read my books.” It seems the Straight Talker still knows how to say “Honor,” but he’s forgotten what the word means.

McCain Ranch
You suffered through pain with Courage and dignity. Your body was broken, but your Honor was intact. Me? I throw away what little Honor I have left for cheap political gain.

You can’t even look at me anymore, can you, son?

You stood up to the Viet Cong, and I can’t even stand up to a couple of Karl Rove’s punks and do what’s right. Every day, my Courage shrinks a little more until it feels like there’s nothing left. And Honor? I fear I’ve forgotten what the word means.

I don’t sleep so well these days. I never used to need these pills before. They help some, but not much.

Won’t you even look at me, son? Have I gone so far in this damn presidential campaign you won’t even look at me?

Oh Lord, what have I done?
