I saw you in a dream last night. You were talking, but your parched, cracked voice was faint, your words indistinct, like you were struggling to contact me over a great distance.
Your sunken eyes beckoned me closer. I leaned forward. You said, “For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?”
You began to fade away, your voice faint as the wind. I barely heard your last words: “Matthew 16:26.”
I woke up in a sweat, searched for my neglected Bible. There,in Matthew 16:26, were Jesus’ words: “For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?”
Oh Lord, what have I done?
