The Katie Hobbs Gubernatorial Campaign and the Arizona Democratic Party released several ads today highlighting the patriotic shortcomings of both Kari Lake and Mark Finchem.
The first ad, from the Katie Hobbs Gubernatorial Campaign, called “Secession” reminds voters that Trump Republican Kari Lake favors secession by getting rid of the federal government.
She also has said she wants to get rid of the F.B.I. (because they executed a legal search warrant on her master, Donald Trump) and wants to strip all women of their reproductive freedom.
In the ad, the narrator points out that many Arizonans would lose their Social Security and Medicare if Lake’s secession ideas were realized. Furthermore, two million more people would lose their health insurance. Six military bases would close and the National Guard would be broken up.
The ad concludes by stating: “Kari Lake is serious about succession and that’s seriously dangerous.”
The next two ads, from the Arizona Democratic Party, call out the treasonous election denialism of Secretary of State candidate Mark Finchem.
The first ad, called “Seize,” features Jason Van Tatenhove, a former propagandist for the Oath Keepers, an extremist far-right militia organization, whose members participated in the Domestic Terrorist-Insurrection attack at the Nation’s Capitol on January 6, 2021.
In the ad, Mr. Van Tatenhove identifies Mark Finchem as a member of the Oaths Keepers. He also reminded the viewers that Finchem was one of the leaders of the effort to decertify the Arizona Presidential Election results. He was also there with the domestic terrorist mob in Washington D.C. on January 6, 2022.
The ad concludes with Mr. Van Tatenhove stating: “It is insane to put Mark Finchem in charge of tallying the votes. That’s a very dangerous proposition.”
The second ad, called “Protect” stars retired county Sheriff K.C. Clark.
Saying it is “his duty to warn Arizonans about Mark Finchem,” Sheriff Clark, like the previous ad, reminds viewers of Mr. Finchem’s membership in the Oath Keepers. Clark states “as a law enforcement officer, it’s disgusting to me. Mark Finchem took the same oath as I did. I believe he has desecrated that oath. An election denier should not be in charge of our elections. Mark Finchem is absolutely the wrong guy for Secretary of State.”
Voters should also be reminded that Mr. Finchem, like Lake, wants to defund the F.B.I. He also keeps a traitors list and has worked with other far-right organizations in the past.
In a statement from the Arizona Democratic Party regarding Mr. Finchem, the ads, and the candidacy of Democratic Secretary of State Nominee Adrian Fontes, spokesperson Morgan Dick wrote:
“Mark Finchem is dangerous and potentially violent. Until he answers for his role on January 6th, we can barely trust him to wander our communities unsupervised, let alone put him in a position to oversee our elections. Arizona voters have the chance to stop his lies and conspiracies at the ballot box and defend our democracy. Adrian Fontes is the better choice for Secretary of State. He’s a Marine Corp veteran, former prosecutor, and former county recorder who will protect our rights.”

FWIW, I think Hobbs’ decision is the right one – Lake has long experience in front of a camera while Hobbs does not.
Katie Hobbs decision not to debate her opponent is getting some attention on cable news this Sunday morning.
I am in agreement with those who believe Hobbs is making a strategic error. And I think her decision is likely to have a more negative effect on her campaign than otherwise.
Voters need to see that Hobb’s can take on the extremists, expose their nonsense, and make the case that she should be the governor in the presence of the challenger. It’s a mistake to dismiss Lake as a crazy lady not worthy of attempting a debate even if she is one.
It’s a weak strategy. The election appears to be statistically tied, and Hobbs needs to re-think her position.
Check out the AZ Governor’s race on 538. It’s showing Lake moving ahead of Hobbs. This is not good.
