With so many former McCain and Romney people recently announcing their intentions to support Joe Biden, Arizona Republicans have had to reach into the depths of the State Legislature to find people to write op-eds spreading debunked statements about Joe Biden wanting to defund the police.
Writing in the August 27, 2020 edition of AZ Central, Arizona Legislative District 23 State Representative John Kavanagh, a retired police detective and Criminal Justice Professor wrote, in his op-ed “Joe Biden flip-flopped on defunding the police. It’s why I’m voting for Trump,” that he is supporting Donald Trump for President because “his (Trump’s) support for our police and public safety is unwavering and unquestioned.”
There are about 180,000 dead people in this country that would probably like to question, if they could, Mr. Kavanagh’s assertion that Mr. Trump’s support for “public safety is unwavering and unquestioned.”
Mr. Kavanagh also claimed that Joe Biden, one of the authors of the 1994 Crime Bill, “is a pandering, wishy-washy politician who will say anything to get elected” because of his supposed flip flop statements on funding the police in July.
That is rich considering the person he supports for the Presidency has lied to the American People over 20,000 times since becoming President.
Furthermore, Mr, Trump, in his own budgets, has proposed cutting funds to law enforcement. What about that John?
Where is that check from Mexico to pay for the wall John?
Where is the health care that would be better and cheaper than Obamacare John?
Where is the infrastructure bill, John?
Where is the person that said he would have no time to play golf, John?
Where are all the good people that he said would staff the White House with John? I could actually answer that one. Those that were good are long gone and have announced that they are not voting for their former boss.
Facts Matter
The statements Mr. Kavanagh references have already been examined by PolitiFact after other allies of the President made the same assertion as LD 23’s representative.
They ruled those assertions false then and they are still false now.
Not enough to convince Mr. Kavanagh or others in his ideological spectrum, how about the video clip the LD 23 representative draws his rationale for not supporting Biden from:
Tell the readers John. Where does either Mr. Biden or Mr. Barkan mention the phrase defund the police?
Need more.
How about this video clip from CBS News
Or this one from Morning Joe
Or this one from ABC News
Like Kavanagh, Joe Biden does not support defunding police. Neither does Kavanagh’s opponent. Democratic Nominee Eric Kurland who commented:
“I am with John in that defunding the police is a nonstarter for me. His editorial is troubling in that rather than fanning the flames for political gain, we, as leaders, should be leading to unite our communities and bridge the divide.”
Mr. Kavanagh: How can you Support Donald Trump
If I was a resident in LD 23, I would be wondering how Mr. Kavanagh, a retired law enforcement official and Criminal Justice Professor, can support Donald Trump.
I would be asking:
- Mr. Kavanagh: How can you support a Presidential Candidate that is an unindicted coconspirator (Individual One)?
- Mr. Kavanagh: How can you support a Presidential Candidate that betrayed his oath of office by attempting to conspire with a foreign government to undermine a political opponent and get impeached as a result?
- Mr. Kavanagh: How can you support a Presidential Candidate that has lied over 20,000 times to the American People?
- Mr. Kavanagh: How can you support a Presidential Candidate that has been endorsed twice by the former leader of the KKK?
- Mr.Kavanagh: How can you support a Presidential Candidate that has threatened to cut law enforcement funding in his own budget proposals.
- Mr. Kavanagh: How can you support a Presidential Candidate that said “there were fine people on both sides” after the racist march on Charlottesville.
- Mr. Kavanagh: How can you support a Presidential Candidate that wished an accused pedophile well.
- Mr. Kavanagh: How can you support a Presidential Candidate that jeopardized public safety, economic stability, and food security with his gross mishandling of the Coronavirus.
- Mr. Kavanagh: How can you support a Presidential Candidate that applauds armed militia that storms statehouses and harassing local public servants.
How can you support Donald Trump Representative Kavanagh when so many Republicans who have served in the Bush Administration and McCain and Romney Campaigns are defecting to the Biden/Harris team?
The people of LD 23 are waiting to hear your answer.
The residents of LD 23 should look at the candidates running this year and look for those that will base their opinions and decisions on reality and facts, not ideological sentiment.
It is time for a teacher.
