This is only a rumor. But the rumor has it the reconvened TUSD Board meeting may not have a call to the audience, a time when audience members are allowed to voice their opinions about the proceedings — in this case, a vote on the resolution to make MAS history an elective credit instead of a core course credit.
Repeat. This is only a rumor. But TUSD, which originally said it would hold the rescheduled meeting in a high school auditorium, has moved it back to the 185 capacity board meeting room, almost certainly to stop a large, pro-MAS crowd from attending the meeting. It's not unreasonable to speculate they might also want to squelch any potentially disruptive commentary from the audience.
True? False? I don't know. But TUSD should do some rumor control and answer the question: WIll the audience — at least those few who get in line early and are allowed into the meeting room — be allowed ample time to comment on the resolution to be considered?
UPDATE: Carolyn Classen wrote in a comment that a 30 minute call to the audience is part of the May 3 agenda:
There is a Call to the Audience (6 p.m. for 30 minutes) on the posted agenda for the May 3 TUSD board meeting: http://www.tusd1.org/contents/govboard/gbagenda.html CALL TO THE AUDIENCE SPECIFICALLY FOR COMMENTS REGARDING ITEM NO. 3 – RESOLUTION REGARDING ETHNIC STUDIES PROGRAMS – Requested by Board Member Adelita Grijalva (Pursuant to Governing Board Policy No. BDAA, at the conclusion of the Call to the Audience, the Governing Board President will ask if individual members wish to respond to criticism made by those who have addressed the Board, wish to ask staff to review a matter, or wish to ask that a matter be put on a future agenda. No more than one board member may address each criticism.)
