We live in an age of crazies running the asylum, and the part of it they don't run, they're trying to run over.
Fountain Hills, Arizona, Town Council had a pretty good idea. Consolidate trash hauling from five carriers to one and create a curbside recycling program. The result would be fewer garbage trucks on the street, about a $1 million savings, and a recycling program.
The problem is, it's Socialism! And the Green Police! will haul people away with the garbage if they don't toe the environmental line (or something like that).
It's Trashcare! (Get it? Obamacare? Trashcare?)
That's what the Fountain Hills Tea Party and the local chapter of the Campaign for Liberty are saying.
And how can you argue with logic like that? Seriously. How is it possible to argue with logic like that? It can't be done.

Do I, as a homeowner and resident of Phoenix, get to choose my trash hauler? No.My recycler? No. The only thing I care about is that my trash is picked up the the appointed time, as is my recycling. I would hope that the city of Phoenix would see the benefit of a cost effective company to do that for us, since that comes out of our taxes. Phoenix is hundreds of times more populated than FH…again the question. Why do they need 5 different haulers in FH?You don’t get to “opt out” of getting your trash picked up, so I’m not sure of your argument there. The town wants to make cost savings with this move…everyone will get their trash picked up, as well as their recycling.Saves $1million.Do you REALLY care as long as you don’t have a mountain of trash in your yard? I think all this belly aching is bs.You don’t want someone else TELLING you that you have to use this trash collector, is that the problem? I think they all need to get over that. Bigger fish to fry.More important issues to argue about. Now, that said, if the people of FH find that this does lead to inferior service/higher prices…then they have an argument. Until then….not worth the argument.
Freedom to purchase a service (let’s say health insurance or trash disposal) or not to purchase a service should be the default in America. Why should I have to justify why I buy or refuse to buy health insurance or a soda or trash disposal from vendor A, B, C, D or E?
I would think that prohibiting competition would be a sure path to monopoly profits for the company who is chosen by the town government. I fail to see how it is likely that the current trash competition in Fountain Hills is providing anybody with lined pockets. The proposed government imposed monopoly is likely to result in higher prices and poorer service going forward.
No, Thane…the bigger questions are: If those teabag types profess to want smaller govt and to save money…why is this an issue? As well as,in a town of 25,000 people…why the hell do you NEED 5 DIFFERENT garbage collectors? Someone’s getting their pockets lined.
The question I would ask is what state law authorizes the town to force residents to use a given trash disposal company? The article fails to discuss that.
Crazy You couldn’t make this stuff up.
