First there were sit-ins.
On February 1, 1960, Joseph McNeil, Franklin McCain, David Richmond, and Ezell Blair, Jr., walked into an F.W. Woolworth Company store in Greensboro, North Carolina, purchased some school supplies, then went to the lunch counter and asked to be served. They knew they probably would not be. The four freshmen at the North Carolina Agricultural and Technical College were black, and this lunch counter was segregated. Still, as one of the students told UPI, "We believe, since we buy books and papers in the other part of the store, we should get served in this part." [17] When they were forced to leave as the store closed, they still had not been served.
Sit-ins spread and helped the Civil Rights movement earn publicity and gain momentum. Soon, there were lie-ins, sleep-ins, buy-ins . . . and then, during the anti-Vietnam War protests, teach-ins. The suffix "in" came to symbolize protest.
That "In" group identification is history. Now it's "Occupy." Occupy Wall Street created immediate natural offshoots around the country — "Occupy" + Geographical Name. But now, "Occupy" is becoming a general use term.
Example:
Occupy the Kochs is a reaction to a D.C. conference by the Koch-funded group, Americans for Prosperity, titled, "Defend the American Dream," where Herman Cain and Grover Norquist will be speakers, among others. The Occupy event's official title is Guerilla Drive-In (I guess "In" hasn't been completely abandoned).
What: The Koch's front group, Americans for Prosperity, is hosting a gala dinner in DC. Outside hundreds (maybe even thousands) of members of the 99% will gather for a Guerrilla Drive-In. We'll Have popcorn, good food, and a great time while we watch fun videos that expose the Koch Brothers in colossal fashion.
Where: The parking lot at 7th St. and L St. Entrance at 1025 7th st. NW (1 block south of Mt. Vernon/Convention Center Metro)
When: Friday Nov. 4th at 6pm. Movies will start at 7pm.
"Defend the American Dream" EXTRA: From the Americans for Prosperity website:
