Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego has been nominated for the Gabrielle Giffords Rising Star Award.

Mayor Gallego received the nomination from the award sponsor, Emily’s List.

In their press release announcing the nomination, Emily’s List President Laphonza Butler wrote:

“EMILY’s list is thrilled to announce that Mayor Kate Gallego is a nominee for the 2022 Gabrielle Giffords Rising Star Award. After being elected with the highest number of votes ever cast for a Phoenix mayoral candidate, Gallego hit the ground running to better the lives of her constituents.”

“Under Mayor Gallego’s leadership, Phoenix is on its way to becoming one of the most sustainable cities in the country. She has fought to drastically improve Phoenix infrastructure, galvanizing the campaign for the largest local government commitment to transportation infrastructure in the United States when it passed in 2015. She is a proponent of business growth and has worked tirelessly to bring new jobs across various sectors to Phoenix, while also advocating for the importance of equal pay for women. EMILY’s List applauds Mayor Gallego’s impressive track record as a civil servant and is eager to see how she continues to positively impact Arizonans in the future.”

In an email to supporters, Mayor Gallego wrote:

“I am honored to have been chosen as a finalist for the Gabrielle Giffords Rising Star Award. Will you take a moment to cast your vote for me here? It’s free and just takes a second!

Named in honor of Arizona’s own Gabrielle Giffords, the Rising Star Award celebrates women serving in state or local office who demonstrates the same sort of commitment to community, dedication to women and families, and determination and civility that have been the highlights of former Rep. Gabrielle Giffords’ career — in and out of office.

I am lucky enough to not only know Gabrielle Giffords as a community leader, but also as a friend…

…I stand on the shoulders of many Arizona women elected before me, and I am humbled by this national recognition.

It is a prestigious award, and one that I hope to earn with the support of the grassroots network we’ve built together…”
