Effective October 1, 2022, City of Phoenix employees, thanks to actions taken by Mayor Kate Gallego and the City Council, are now eligible to receive up to 12 weeks of paid parental leave over a year period.
In a news release from the City, this new program:
“…Demonstrates the City’s commitment to creating an environment where employees don’t have to choose between growing a career or growing a family…it provides greater flexibility for employees to take leave so they can bond with and care for a new child, without exhausting their accrued leave time. Paid Parental Leave, along with the City’s other generous benefits, could help in retaining and recruiting top talent to serve our community.”

When the program was originally announced, Mayor Gallego commented:
“Expanding our parental leave program to 480 hours (12 weeks) builds on steps the city council has taken to create a more competitive compensation and benefits program important for our employees, both current and future. As a mom, I’m proud that we are delivering parents the opportunity to spend those formative times with their newborn, and I’m proud that our employees will now have that opportunity extended to them more substantially than ever before.”
Perhaps this is a program Arizona members of Congress or the State Legislature could look into molding and adopting for Grand Canyon state residents and the American People.
