Phone, email Brewer before Friday morning

by David Safier

From Robin Hiller at Voices for Education:

Call Governor Brewers office at 1-800-253-0883 and ask her to support
education.

The Arizona state Legislature convened a special session today and is trying
to ram through a $128 million cut to public education. The cut would be $120
for each traditional public school student and $40 for every charter school
student.
The Leadership (Bob Burns-President of the Senate) and Kirk Adams (Speaker
of the House) are counting on our new governor, Jan Brewer, to sign off on
this tomorrow [Friday].

Call Gov. Jan Brewer's office immediately at 1-800-253-0883 ( the prompt
will have you push "1") and urge her to NOT sign this legislation.
(You can also email her at http://azgovernor.gov/Contact.asp )

Let her know that our children and our state can't take another cut to
public education.

Governor Brewer is the priority call.

  1. David, thanks for the contact information. I considered it a waste of time, given his asinine public comments about the budget, to contact our senator, Al Melvin, so I sent the following to Governor Brewer:

    Governor Brewer-

I have been an Arizona educator for 18 years. This state is where I have started my profession and my family. My wife, who is also an educator, and I are blessed to be the parents of 13-year old twins.

We have never wanted to leave Arizona, but have thought about it a few times because of how hard it is to be a child in this state. Our dropout rate, the number of uninsured children, the high incidence of poverty and the unconscionable number of teen suicides and pregnancies have made us wonder if this is where our children should be raised. However, we have always stayed because the “good fights” can’t be won if those on the front lines abandon their posts.

This budget mess we are in means that you and others in power face some hard decisions and tough choices. For too many years, those in government, both Democrat and Republican, have dodged making the difficult calls. As you prepare to consider the first budget of your term, I ask you to do nothing that will make Arizona an even more difficult place to be a child. The young should not be asked to sacrifice to atone for the sins of the rest of us.

Please do the right thing and tell the Legislature that you will not stand for huge cuts that will affect our kids and their schools. If we want Arizona to be a place where business flourishes, then we must have schools that employers can tout to their employees. Moreover, we can not ask Arizona’s children to once again bear the brunt of any solution to our state’s budgetary problems. To do so would be both shortsighted and unfair.

    Thank you!
