Pima County Bd. of Supervisors appoint former D 5 Supervisor Betty Villegas to LD 20 House seat

Three term LD 20 House Rep. Andres Cano, a Democrat, resigned his seat on July 4, 2023 to pursue a Master’s degree at Harvard. Former District 5 Pima Couny Supervisor Betty Villegas was appointed today by the Pima County Board of Supervisors to finish up that term. Board Chair Adelita Grijalva made the nomination motion, seconded by Supervisor Rex Scott.The vote was 3-1, with Republican Supervisor Steve Christy voting no.

Betty was appointed to fill the Pima County Board of Supervisors seat for District 5 in April, 2020 after the sudden passing of Board Chair Richard Elias. She served out his term to December 2020. TUSD Board member Adelita Grijalva was elected to that seat in Nov. 2020. Adelita is the daughter of CD 7 Congressman Raul Grijalva.

LD 20 Democrats had recently met & sent 3 names to the Board for consideration for this seat. The other two nominees were Elma Alvarez and Lourdes Escalante, also residents of LD 20 legislative district.

Betty Villegas is the Executive Housing Director of City of South Tucson’s Housing Authority and was previously Pima County’s Housing Program Manager for Community Development and Neighborhood Reinvestment, before serving on the Pima County Board of Supervisors. Congratulations to her on this new appointment. Also serving in LD 20 House is Democrat Alma Hernandez.
