LD 9 Rep. Dr. Randy Friese resigned from his House seat effective Nov . 15, 2021. He would have been termed out in 2022, as he has served 7 years. The precinct committeepersons in LD 9 met on Nov, 19 and voted for 3 nominees to be sent to the Pima County Board of Supervisors for appointment, to fill this House seat for the remainder of 2021 and all of 2022.
The PCs selected out of a field of 13 interested persons: 3 nominees — former teacher Nathan Davis (who ran for Amphi School Bd, in Nov. 2020), elder law attorney Chris Mathis, and activist Anakarina Rodriguez of La Familia Vota.
The Pima County Board of Supervisors met on December 7, to make this appointment. District 1 Supervisor Rex Scott made the motion to appoint Chris Mathis, seconded by Supervisor Sharon Bronson, vote was 3-1-1 with Supervisor Adelita Grijalva against, Republican Supervisor Steve Christy abstaining.

An alternate motion to appoint Anakarina Rodriguez by Supervisor Adelita Grijalva (seconded by Matt Heinz) had failed, 2-2-1.
Congrats to Chris Mathis. He is an elder law attorney and UA Law Professor, and husband to Colleen Mathis, former Chair (I) of the Independent Redistricting Commission in 2010.
Mathis spoke at Democrats of Greater Tucson on Nov. 15 and here’s the video on his talk: Video & Transcript: Chris Mathis, Candidate for LD 9 State House at Democrats of Greater Tucson – Blog for Arizona.
Mathis will be running for this House seat in 2022, as will Davis and a few other political newcomers.
The other LD 9 House Rep. Pam Powers Hannley (a blogger here at BFAZ) has also announced she will not be running for re-election after 3 terms. So there will be two openings in LD 9 House.
