The Pima County Board of Supervisors met today in their regular meeting and voted to appoint Dr.Sylvia Lee to serve on the Board with them, representing District 3. Long term Supervisor Sharon Bronson resigned on Nov. 21, 2023 due to a recent fall & injuries. She had been first elected in 1996, re-elected 2000, 2004, 2008, 2012, 2016, 2020.
Supervisor Rex Scott made the motion to appoint Dr.Sylvia Lee to the seat, seconded by Supervisor Matt Heinz.Vote was 3-1 with Supervisor Adelita Grijalva voting yes and Republican Supervisor Steve Christy voting no. Dr. Lee served for one term (6 years) on PCC Governing Board, and was also President of PCC Community Campus and the NW campus as well. Sylvia is of Anglo/Chinese/Japanese descent.

Previous motions & voting by the Board to appoint first April Ignacio (2-2), then Jennifer Allen (2-2) & then Kristen Randall (no second to the motion) all failed.
A forum hosted by the League of Women Voters of Greater Tucson was held virtually on Monday Dec. 11, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. for 8 applicants for this seat to present themselves and answer questions. Video of the forum here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V0PkrwB7dYE

Jennifer Allen, former E.D. of ACLU of Arizona and active with League of Conservation Voters and Border Action Network.
April Ignacio, a founding member of Indivisible Tohono and AZ Dems Vice chair; endorsed by Pima County Recorder Gabriella Cazares-Kelly (who spoke in her support at this meeting)
Brian Johnson, former Pima County Assessor’s Office staffer who ran twice in Democratic primaries for Assessor in 2016 and 2020, intending to be candidate for Pima County Treasurer in 2024
Matt Kopec, a member of Amphitheater Public Schools Governing Board (elected 2018 & 2022) and a former AZ state house rep. (appointed to LD 9 House for one year), former Ward 3 Council aide
Joe Machado, former Nogales city attorney and Santa Cruz County Attorney
Kristen Randall, Green Valley Justice Court administrator and former Pima County Constable (Precinct 8)
Edgar Soto, Vice President of Pima Community College’s Desert Vista Campus
Of these 8 applicants, 3 said they would be running for the District 3 seat in 2024 – Jennifer Allen, April Ignacio and Kristen Randall. The other 5 only wanted the one year position.
Dr.Lee will serve about a year to Dec. 2024, and does not intend to run for the D 3 Supervisory seat. All Pima County Supervisors are up for re-election in Nov. 2024.

Yes, Mark you know Sylvia well as you served with her on the PCC Governing Bd. She will bring a sane voice to Pima County Supervisor deliberations, and will serve the County with dedication and competence as when she served PCC. I know her and was friends with her family (Mom & siblings) who all belonged to the Tucson Chinese Cultural Center.
