Pima Dems urge appeal of Ethnic Studies ruling

Media Release from the Pima County Democratic Party:

Pima Dems Call on TUSD to Appeal Huppenthal Ruling to Superior Court.

The Pima County Democratic Party urges the TUSD Governing Board to appeal Superintendent Huppenthal’s administrative ruling to superior court. We further reiterate our support for the TUSD Mexican American Studies curriculum and condemn Tom Horne and John Huppenthal’s continuing attacks on TUSD’s Ethnic Studies program.

TUSD’s Ethnic Studies curriculum has been proven time and again to increase graduation rates and encourages students to pursue a college education and should be applauded, not dismantled. Superintednent Huppenthal’s own taxpayer-funded independent audit concluded that the curriculum is not violating state law.

“We will not sit idly by as politicians play these political games at the expense of our children,” said Pima County Democratic Party Chair Jeff Rogers. “Republicans talk a lot about local control, but when the desires of the locals run counter to the Phoenix politicians, we find out quickly just how committed to local control they truly are.”
