We’re going to touch on the Legislative races first, since there could be many changes on both sides of the aisle, thanks to redistricting, term limits, deaths and resignations to run for higher office. We’re also going to cover the statewide offices, since Arizona will be electing a new governor and others in the executive branch this year and there is a lot of competition. We’ll close with some comments on the Congressional races and other races as we have time.

We’ll start with the hot races in the Legislature on both sides of the aisle.

  1. Interesting that former Congresswoman Gabby Giffords has not endorsed her former intern/LD 2 Rep. Daniel Hernandez Jr. as he runs for CD 2, esp. as he is credited with saving her life on Jan. 8, 2011 at that Tucson Mass Shooting.

    • Well, Carolyn, another way to see this is that Kirsten Engel landed the “Whale” of endorsements, that of Ann Kirkpatrick the outgoing representative and recovering alcoholic. AK is friends with GG when she was shot and this event opened AK’s eyes to the fact that getting shot kills and maims mostly innocent people. Prior to Jan 8 2011 AK just didn’t get this and she just loved all the guns and the NRA. But then a friend got shot and she saw the light.

So, where are we? AK is a whale endorsement, AK is a friend of GG, AK endorses KE. That must mean that KE is the Democratic Establishment Favorite. So in politics, perhaps you go with the party favorite not the one who saved your life.

I voted for Daniel Hernandez. Always liked him. I think he’s the real deal and would be an OUTSTANDING representative for my CD.

And I’m sorry for all the sarcasm.

      • Thanks for your comments Liza about the AK endorsement. Former Congressman Ron Barber, who also was shot at that Tucson Mass Shooting hasn’t endorsed Daniel either.

        • Carolyn, I was just looking at the endorsements. Ron Barber has endorsed Kirsten Engel. KE’s list of endorsements does seem to indicate she’s the party favorite. Giffords has not endorsed either candidate.

          • Thanks for the clarification. So Barber endorsed Engel despite Daniel saving Gabby’s life on that fateful day. He was District Director for Gabby when that shooting occurred, and Daniel was their intern.
