From the Capitol Times (subscription only): Melvin/Arpaio mind meld on a volunteer militia to fight crime on the border:
During the committee meeting, Melvin talked about the success that Arpaio had had with his all-volunteer citizen posse in fighting immigration crime. That posse could be used as a model for the state guard, Melvin said.
“They’re all volunteers, they’re unpaid, they’re armed, we teach them how to use those weapons,” Melvin said of the yet-to-be authorized state militia.
During the meeting, Arpaio offered to “take over” the state guard, which he said his office would manage like they do its immigration posse.
“If the federal government isn’t going to do it,” he said, “maybe it’s time to take the law into our own hands.”
The law-and-order folks want to take the law into their own hands. Anyone else see a contradiction here?
