Remember the Movie “Seven Days in May”? The Real Life Version May Be Coming to a Blue City Near You

In 1964, Paramount Pictures released the political suspense thriller Seven Days in May, starring Burt Lancaster, Kirk Douglas, and Fredric March.

Based on a novel written by Fletcher Knebel and Charles W. Bailey II and a screenplay by Twilight Zone creator Rod Serling, Lancaster portrays a Douglas MacArthur-Curtis LeMay type Joint Chiefs Chairman who, with the support of the other Joint Chiefs and like-minded legislators and media types, organizes an attempted military coup to overthrow the President of the United States.

The plan is foiled when his assistant, played by Douglas, catches wind of the plot, alerts the Administration, and stops the coup from occurring.

Fast forward to today and people should wonder if there is a real life 2025 version of Seven Days in May occurring with Donald Trump and the people pulling his strings heading this production where they are the actual coup plotters aiming to establish, as detailed in some passages of their Mein Kampf, Project 2025, the establishment of an Authoritarian Government here in the United States.

Consider these ominous signs.

  • Turnover of the top brass at the Defense Department by Pete Hegseth, replacing leading officers with individuals whom Trump and he feel would be more loyal to them.
  • The budget of Trump’s Gestapo, ICE, or as Ezra Klein calls it, his paramilitary force, is greater than the F.B.I. and D.E.A. Staffing may surpass both agencies as well in the coming years. Recruitment criteria for ICE are also suspect, with compromised standards where they appear to be looking for people who believe in their brand of patriotism.

One should wonder who would be included in this mass deportation and what is Trump and MAGA’s interpretation of who is the worst.

Do not be surprised if, suddenly, political enemies are among the ones considered to be rounded up for deportation.

He is already going after non-illegal immigrants like former members of his Administration, like John Bolton and others, including FED Governor Lisa Cook, on flimsy accusations.

Ejecting people who disagree

He is putting people on leave, including those who disagree with his policies and those who have spoken out against his actions, such as those at FEMA, the EPA, and the Labor Department.

Hegseth fired the head of the Defense Intelligence Agency, General Jeffrey Kruse, the agency that said the United States Bunker Bomb strike on the underground Iranian Nuclear Facilities may not have done the damage Trump and his sycophants boasted about.

Of course, the construction of the new concentration camps to detain them, along with the existing facilities, despite a judge calling for the closure of Alligator Alcatraz, is moving along.

Anyone worried about a 2025 version of the Nazi Night of Long Knives yet.

Then there is Trump sending (and then quietly withdrawing) National Guard troops to patrol Los Angeles.

More recently, in another public relations move targeted at his uninformed White Nationalist MAGA base, Trump sent Guard troops to Washington, D.C., where these soldiers appear to be lounging around, patrolling the minuscule crime rate areas like Union Station, getting their 10,000 steps in by walking, and taking out bags of street garbage.

Even D.C. grand juries are throwing out cases that Trump’s Injustice Goons are bringing.

He has threatened to send more National Guard troops to other blue cities with falling crime rates run by Black Mayors in blue states like Illinois, Maryland, and New York on the false pretense that crime is out of control in those areas, ignoring the parts of the country in states that voted for him like Kansas City, Memphis, Birmingham, and Little Rock where crime is more rampant.

Trump’s recent Executive Order expressing his desire to establish “specialized units” in the National Guard that will be “specifically trained and equipped to deal with public order issues” should send shivers up everyone’s spines.

Of course, some leaders are also worried about irking Trump, who several contend is playing God with who gets FEMA disaster relief, when, and how much.

This is the same Donald Trump who wants to play God in determining who gets to vote in this nation, with repressive steps like taking away mail-in voting.

Finally, these chilling clips from his Pay Tribute to Dear Leader Cabinet Meeting, where Trump said:

“I have the right to do anything I want to do. I’m the President of the United States. If I think our country is in danger, and it is in danger in these cities, I can do it.”

Very scary, eerily reminiscent of Richard Nixon telling David Frost that “When the President does it, it’s not illegal.”

Thank you United States Supreme Court for that Presidential Immunity Decision. You just enabled a 79 year old juvenile delinquent into thinking he could do whatever he wants and damn the consequences.

Good job morons.

Of course, at the same event where he was disparaging Illinois Governor JB Pritzker for not asking him for help to send in the guard and solve the fictitious Chicago crime wave, Trump said, with a straight face, that allegations that he is a dictator and wants to be one are not true, despite many of his people who are warm to that idea.

If you believe that, there is a bridge in Brooklyn I want to sell you.

All this is happening while MAGA allied news organizations like FOX and Newsmax, fresh off their multi million dollar settlements with Dominion for their false reporting of election fraud in 2020, is, like most of the White House Press Corp, not challenging the accuracy or downright bombastic tenor of Trump’s comments in real time either because they are true believers or for fear of retribution on them after the Felon in Chief and his loyalists threatened taking away access.

Is fiction becoming reality? You bet.

Unfortunately, this is not Star Trek, where that show inspired technological innovations like the cell phone and iPad. This is 1984, It Can’t Happen Here, The Handmaid’s Tale, The Manchurian Candidate, and Seven Days in May all rolled into one.

People need to rise up and peacefully assert their rights while they are still available.

Otherwise, we will be consigned to an Apartheid Banana Republic where White Christian Nationalism is dogma and the nation’s wealthiest will have their new golden Gilded Age. At the same time, everyone else struggles to make ends meet and has to worry every day for that knock on the door in the middle of the night from one of Trump’s paramilitary stooges who claim you are not American enough to stay in this country.
