If the Arizona Republican Party can't count on business leaders to support them, who can they count on?
The Tucson economic development group recently asked businesses what they most want the state Legislature to fund. The answer was resounding: education.
About 77 percent of 600 respondents checked the box on the survey that said "AZ needs to make significant new investments in educational achievement to meet real needs and avoid a crisis."
Note the phrase "significant new investments." Quite a ways from "We're going to have to make some painful cuts in education."
The business priorities listed in order were, "maintaining elementary education funding, increasing economic development, maintaining higher education funding, investing in transportation and updating technology and communication infrastructure."

I found myself in a mixed group (Rs and Ds) and the Rs were arguing against taxes. Being something of a wise-ass, I commented: “Sure, don’t tax people and you can build your own road up to Phoenix.” Nobody said anything but the subject of taxation suddenly turned to something else.
I view taxes as the dues I pay to live in this Democracy – an expression of my participation in this community. Seems pretty simple to me – why doesn’t it seem simple to others?????
Now if we could only get the business community to understand that you can’t have all this good stuff and tax cuts year after year too. Somebody has to pay for education, transportation, and infrastructure. Guess where that money comes from? That’s right! It’s the Tax Fairy.
It is truly a pleasure to be able to agree with Republicans on a subject as critical as our public education system! I suggest they convey their position on education directly and strongly to their Republican legislators and most especially to the soon-to-be governor, Jan Brewer, whose statements about cutting expenses are pretty darned scary!!!
Whenever Republicans and Democrats can agree strongly on any issue, progress will be made!!!!
