It's becoming the standard Republican M.O. in Arizona and across the nation: Don't take part in a debate or forum with Democratic candidates if you don't have to.
The Accidental Guv set the standard in Arizona. She showed up for the now famous debate with Goddard because she had to, admitting the only reason she was there was to pick up her $1.7 million-plus check from Clean Elections. It seems attending a debate is a requirement.
Al Melvin in LD-26 is ducking and dodging a face-to-face meeting with Cheryl Cage. He says he doesn't have time — too busy knocking on doors. And he won't talk to the "liberal media" at all. But he has time for three 2-hour "Town Halls" on Sept. 25. There's plenty of time when he has the floor to himself.
Vic Williams and Terri Proud don't want to be in the same room with Nancy Young Wright. An event in Flowing Wells has already been cancelled because the Rs refused to show, and they're all backing out of an education forum at Foothills High as well (Melvin sent his refusal. Williams and Proud have simply not responded to a registered letter.)
In LD-30, a Vail educational forum was cancelled because — you guessed it — Antenori, Vogt and Gowan said they weren't going to show. Antenori also said he's not attending the Foothills forum; Vogt and Gowan haven't responded.
Ben Quayle doesn't want to debate Jon Hurlburd in the CD-3 congressional race.
And on and on throughout the state and the country.
The reason? It's simple. The Republicans' message won't stand up to scrutiny. They prefer the hit-and-run sound bite and the 30 second ad to the kind of honest discussion that lets voters make informed decisions.

These organizations should not be canceling their events because the Republicans refuse to participate. The events should go forward with the candidates who agree to show up. These organizations should not allow themselves to be dictated to by the Republicans.
And John Huppenthal has said, “No debates,” with Penny Kotterman. He has already ducked or cancelled more than 4 appearances. Not really ready for “transparency,” I guess.
