If you're Russell Pearce and Cardinal Roger Mahony says your anti-immigration bill is "the country's most retrogressive, mean-spirited, and useless anti-immigrant law," how do you respond?
[Pearce called] the Roman Catholic leader a "guy who's been protecting child molesters and predators all of his life."
"He's the last guy that ought to be speaking out," Pearce said on the Michael Smerconish Program, a nationally syndicated radio talk show that airs locally on KFWB-AM 980. "This guy has a history of protecting and moving predators around in order to avoid detection by the law. He has no room to talk."
[snip]
"Where does he stand up for America and the rule of law?" the Republican legislator said of Mahony. "He ought to be embarrassed and he ought to be drummed out as far as I'm concerned."
Pearce, of course, doesn't limit his, ahem, measured criticism to leaders of the Catholic Church. He takes on Terry Goddard with equally, ahem, measured criticism.
[Pearce] said that if Goddard doesn't like the efforts to crack down on illegal immigration, he should go to another state that "is more friendly to his friends, the illegal aliens."
Critics should take a number and wait their turns. Pearce will insult them all when their numbers come up.

Let’s see, how does that go? Something about disagreeing without being disagreeable? I guess Russell Pearce never heard about that. If your argument has merit, you don’t have to get nasty and personal with those who disagree with you, Mr. Pearce!
