An illustrative comment from Meade. It's OK to be without a birth certificate if you're (a) not living in Arizona post SB1070, or (b) white.
I recently celebrated my 75th year on this planet. I never saw my official birth certificate until 8 years ago when I obtained a certified copy thinking I might get a passport. Yet I obtained a driver's license in my birth state, registered to vote (on a 4 page application form and paid a poll tax)and do not recall ever having to prove where I was born. I moved to various states, by reciprocity obtaining driver's licenses and voter registration as I relocated, most recently in Arizona. My name is different from that on my birth certificate, as I was married at one time, so in addition to my birth certificate I really should carry my marriage and divorce papers to prove that I am me. Of course, it is highly unlikely that an officer would have a "reasonable suspicion" that I was born in another country as I am white. Yet, are there no white "illegal aliens" in this country? This law does not pass the sniff test.
