Interesting column on HuffPo by Dave Zirin, Sports correspondent for the Nation (Sports correspondent for the Nation? Who knew?)
Zirin says anti-SB1070 Angelenos should root against coach Phil Jackson and for Los Suns.
Jackson said this in favor of SB1070:
"Am I crazy, or am I the only one that heard [the legislature] say 'we just took the United States immigration law and adapted it to our state.'" When sports reporter J.A. Adande remarked that SB 1070 actually represented "the usurping of federal law," Jackson responded, "It's not usurping…. they gave it some teeth to be able to enforce it."
And he said Los Suns should shut the hell up about political issues. This after Jackson, um, opened his mouth about a political issue.
LA supporting Los Suns? That works for me. After all, their city council voted to create a partial economic and travel boycott of Arizona, and the LA Times advocated relocating the 2011 All-Star game. LA should go all in on this and support the Phoenix team.
Except that, they're supposed to boycott all things Arizonan, so how can they support an Arizona team?
Yet, by supporting Los Suns, they're supporting the anti-SB1070 movement and showing Jackson what they think of a "1960s flower child who has made the lucrative journey from rebel to reactionary."
But if any of them buy a Los Suns jersey, the money will probably go to Arizona.
Therefore . . . I'm so confused!
Regardless, Viva Los Suns!
