Good science fiction has plenty of examples of predicting the future.
In literature, there is Jules Verne and From Earth to the Moon and Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea.
There is also Ray Bradbury and Fahrenheit 451.
In movies and television, there is Babylon Five, the Star Wars Prequels (Minus Jar Jar,) and Star Trek.
One Star Trek episode may be very prophetic for these current times.
It is the second season Original Series episode called “Patterns of Force.”
In that episode, Kirk and Spock journey to the Planet Ekos to find out what happened to Federation Cultural Observer and Historian John Gill.
It turns out Gill wanted to help the people on that planet by reforming their society on a humanized and inclusive form of Nazism.
Unfortunately for him, one of his right-hand men, Deputy Führer Melakon, a rabid racist against the people of neighboring Zeon (Zion) and imperial expansionist, has taken over the government, drugging Gill and making him a puppet figurehead who is fed scripted lines to recite from controlled settings without much interaction with the people.
Take that particular episode and apply it to today.
Since Trump’s return, who is pulling the strings on racist, xenophobic, and fascist-authoritarian policy initiatives while Trump spends days away on the golf course and writing (if it is him writing) insane social media posts.
Earlier, it was Elon Musk and DOGE before he was forced out.
It is “Judenrat” Stephen Miller and “Give me $50,000” Tom Homan who are carrying out Trump’s anti-immigrant and Domestic Terrorist ICE-Gestapo activities across the country.
It is White Christian Nationalist fanatic Russell Vought who is executing the terms of the MAGA Mein Kampf-Project 2025 to his heart’s content, with or without a government shutdown.
Now, never think that Trump is a well-meaning person who honestly has benevolent thoughts about righting the American ship of state.
He never has been.
It is just that he is clearly a shell of what he once was, publicly making outlandish and false scripted and parroted statements about the nation’s economic strength under his leadership, apparently not understanding that millions of people, including many of his supporters in blue and red states are about to see their health insurance rates spike up, saying he ended a war between Albania and Azerbaijan, and not recognizing people from his dark past like Jeffrey Epstein’s associate, calling Democrats gnats, Ghislaine Maxwell and what was she was convicted of.
All of this embarrassing rhetoric and scripted theatrics while unelected White Nationalist Racist Suited Thugs like Miller, Homan, and Vought rule from the White House and tear apart the country.
And Star Trek predicted this could happen close to 60 years ago.
