We've got a new crowd of "principled conservatives" from Arizona who are unpacking their jammies in their new Washington digs. They're not politicians. They mean what they say. They stick to their guns. And they hate "Obamacare." So I'm sure they'll turn down that socialist health care they get for being members of congress, right? I mean, if government health care is bad for the folks back home, it's bad for them too.
Take David Schweikert (AZ-5), who crowed about signing the Club for Growth's I-Hate-The-Healthcare-Bill pledge in one of his candidate press releases:
David Schweikert, the leading candidate for the Republican nomination in Arizona’s Fifth Congressional District has signed the Club for Growth’s Pledge to repeal the Democrat’s nationalized healthcare bill should it become law.
[snip]
“This legislation is horribly unpopular in Arizona’s Fifth Congressional District and yet Harry Mitchell has shown his true liberal colors in voting for it anyway."
[snip]
"Giving elected officials and candidates the opportunity to pledge to repeal this incredibly unpopular legislation should it become law gives citizens across the country the opportunity to find out who is willing to do the right thing and pledge to repeal it and those who won’t.” [boldface added]
Do the right thing, David. Don't let them seduce you into taking that congressional health care.
Then there's Paul Gosar (AZ-1), who was president of the American Dental Association in 2004. In an article on the ADA website the day after the election, Gosar is quoted saying "government [is] running amok with its finances," and the health care bill is one of the biggest offenders.
It is inappropriate that the government has stepped between the health care provider and the patient. I’m definitely against this health care bill (Public Law 111-148) and would like to defund or repeal substantial parts of this and truly open up the free market.” [boldface added]
Don't participate in that inappropriate meddling of the government in health care, Paul. Go with the free market. Buy your health insurance straight from one of those upstanding insurance companies — and be sure they don't cut you a sweetheart deal just because you're a congressman. Wouldn't be ethical.
And of course, no list would be complete without Ben Quayle (AZ-3), going after the health care bill in a Q & A in the Republic.
The federal healthcare package is an enormous burden on small business that is already stifling economic growth and job creation. It adds billions to our liabilities. It does nothing to control soaring healthcare costs. We constantly find out about more destructive federal mandates and regulations buried in this law.
We need to repeal Obamacare and vote for real reform including expanding health savings accounts, tort reform, allowing citizens to buy out of state insurance and increasing competition between insurers. [boldface added]
Right on, Ben! Don't be the guy who participates in adding billions to our liabilities by letting the government buy your health care for you. It's just another destructive federal mandate.
I can't wait to hear all these guys tell the government they can take their congressional health care and stick it where the proctologist sticks . . . Well, you get the idea. Maybe they can organize a group press conference with all the other new Republicans.
