About this Event
“Join us for a night of Technology, Entertainment, and Design!
We will listen to 7 inspiring speakers from throughout the UofA community, eat the best food from around Tucson and experience some of the most exciting things the UofA has to offer.
This year’s theme is “Aberration”, defined as a departure from what is normal, usual, or expected, typically one that is unwelcome. Our talks will challenge your expectations and preconceptions of science, law, philosophy, and more.
“Aberration” is also a term used in photography used to describe the separation of colors in an image, which we have replicated throughout the experience of our event.
Below you can see our fantastic lineup of speakers and their talks’ titles. We hope they excite you as much as they excite us!”
Carolyn’s note: That’s my husband UA Distinguished Professor Albrecht Classen listed above. He’s been with the UA German Studies Dept. since August, 1987.

7 eclectic talks by UA Professors and students to a large audience tonight in the ENR 2 Building. Each talk did challenge the norm, thinking outside the box, about differences. Prof. Mars started off defining innovation as “exceptional obsession”, by ordinary people, with 4 traits: experimentation, agility, resourcefulness/ingenuity & sense making. Then Prof. Altognini talked about marriage as societal norms, so what about the growing # of people who choose not to marry, and coverture rights, esp. for women. My husband Prof. Classen spoke about communication and language for global citizenry, building bridges not walls, for a multi-cultural world. Then UA sophomore Pate told about his research with fruit flies to reverse Parkinson’s disease, doing neurogami protein work. After the intermission with snacks, Prof. Galbraith lectured on bio-diversity, that we can not escape cosmic rays and that there is no chance of colonization elsewhere (i.e. Mars). Student Valencia in higher ed, related the racism he experienced at UA and how he has challenged his work to internal action to change, esp. on toxic masculinity. Finally Prof. Warren explained her research on corporate activism, studying companies that support issues that create social activism, that firms should be held accountable as sales reflect such action (boycotts of products). The Charles Darwin Improv group entertained at the VIP reception afterwards at Gould-Simpson Building. Stay tuned for Youtube videos of these talks.
