Before becoming President thanks to the Electoral College, the 2016 Popular Vote Loser, routinely stiffed vendors who had completed or performed services for his many (now bankrupt) enterprises by either not paying or fully compensating them.
Now, the Liar in Chief, in a move (via tweet) that would only benefit authoritarian besties, Erdogan of Turkey and Putin of Russia, has proposed to stiff the Kurds who helped the United States against I.S.I.S. in the areas bordering Syria and Turkey.
Unlike his going back on his word to his vendors, this double-cross will be deadly as the Kurdish forces will have to face off against Turkish, Syrian, or resurgent I.S.I.S. cells all by themselves and without United States protection in this part of the Middle East.
This is a breach of American commitments to a reliable ally and a failing of Presidential leadership.
Republicans who have had laryngitis with regards to Individual One’s potential impeachment transgressions have been quick, along with Democrats to condemn the President’s decision via tweet. People like Marco Rubio, Lindsey Graham, and Trump’s former United Nations Ambassador Niki Haley are calling for the Administration to change their position and protect the Kurds.
Even the Political Prince of Darkness-Enemy of the People-Obstructionist in Chief Moscow Mitch McConnell has come out against this move.
Getting out of this part of the world is bad policy. It will:
- Further inflame territorial and cultural tensions between Turkey, Syria, and Kurdish factions.
- Drive Turkey further into authoritarianism
- Financially and Regionally assist Putin’s Russia who, since the time of the Tsars, has always had historic and territorial interests in that region.
- Provide an area for I.S.I.S. to reconstitute itself in the resulting chaos.
- Harm the local Kurdish populations who will face genocidal advances from the Turks, Syrian, and I.S.I.S. forces.
The Kurds are a race that has been continually double-crossed throughout Modern History.
Living in areas that are parts of Turkey, Iran, Iraq, and Syria, this group with their own culture were denied their own country by the peacemakers following World War One and have always had their interests sacrificed for larger considerations in the years afterward.
They should not be treated as pawns this time.
There are no larger considerations for Mr. Trump to base this new decision other than making nice with his authoritarian buddies.
That is not a good reason to sacrifice the Kurds who helped defeat I.S.I.S. when we most needed them.
This is not what America is supposed to be about and everyone in this country should stop this move from going into effect before innocent lives are needlessly butchered.
Future generations will not forgive if action is not taken now.
