AZ Republicans are blowing smoke once again to obscure their unconscionable defunding of education. This time, it's that old favorite, the 65% solution.
State lawmakers are moving to require schools to spend at least 65 percent of their funding on classroom expenses – but using a method that the top education official in the state says is wrong.
The simple math is, the less you spend on education, the lower the percentage that goes into the classroom. Fixed costs remained fixed, and they eat up more of the budget when the overall spending goes down. You can't cut back on utilities, transportation, and things like that.
Who agrees with me? None other than Tom Horne. On those rare occasions when we agree, odds are, we're both right.
