The Crusade Against Babies

by David Safier

I'm turning into a big EJ Montini fan. His coverage of the whole trumped up immigration scare has been excellent. And the man knows how to turn a phrase.

Case in point: the term "Crusade against babies":

U.S. Sen. Jon Kyl is leading the way.

That is to say, Kyl has decided to sprint to the front of the parade being led by State Sen. Russell Pearce and see if he, too, might lead the political crusade against babies.

Kyl, like Pearce, believes that the time might be right to challenge the Supreme Court’s interpretation of the 14th Amendment, which guarantees citizenship to any child born in the United States, including the children of illegal immigrants.

I've been looking around for a term, and the best I've come up with is "Baby Birtherism." Montini's term beats mine hands down.

And then there's this reminder at the end of his post:

And hardly any of us chooses to remember that it wasn’t that long ago that our parents, or grandparents or great-grandparents lived happily in this country without papers.

What? Our grandparents were here without papers? Impossible! Not in these great United States! Say it ain't so, EJ!
