“An adaptation of his own Tony-winning play, Stephen Karam’s directorial debut is a Thanksgiving dinner invitation you won’t want to turn down.
Featuring poignant, funny, lived-in performance from a stellar ensemble – Richard Jenkins, Steven Yeun, Beanie Feldstein, Amy Shumer, June Squibb and Jayne Houdyshell – The Humans tracks the emotional intricacies of a working-class family bound by tradition, contention and unshakable loyalties. Erik and Diedre Blake (Jenkins and Houdyshell) have gathered three generations of their Pennsylvania family to celebrate Thanksgiving at their daughter’s new, slightly dilapidated, apartment in lower Manhattan. As darkness falls outside and things start to fall apart inside (with a few eerie bumps in the night thrown in to enhance the sense of unease), the group’s deepest joys, fears and regrets are laid bare. Piercingly funny and undeniably haunting, The Humans explores the hidden dread of a family and the love that binds them together. An A24 release. (Dir. by Stephen Karam, 2021, USA, 108 mins., Rated R)”

Carolyn’s note: Thanksgiving is coming on Nov. 25, 2021 and this movie may trigger memories of some of those family gatherings of the past. I remember ours, with extended family of uncles/aunts/cousins and other friends, usually hosted by my mother/father or another aunt/uncle. Tradition, assimilation into American culture, loyalties (or not) were revealed, probably in yours too. After all, aren’t we all human? What are you thankful for on Thanksgiving? Remember, we are all human. U are human.
